The Wuhan Branch of Chinese Academy of Sciences [CAS], one of the twelve nationally distributed branches of CAS, is situated in Wuhan, China, a famous historical and cultural city along the Yangtze River. It was founded in July 1958 after a two-year preparation. In January of 1961, it was incorporated into Central-South China Branch [CSCB] with the Guangzhou Branch. After the disbandment of CSCB,WHB was resumed in 1978.
Wuhan Branch of CAS is composed of 9 independent organizations, inculding the headquarter of Wuhan Branch, Wuhan Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, Wuhan Institute of Physics and Mathematics, Institute of Geodesy and Geophysics, Wuhan Institute of Virology, Wuhan Botanical Garden [Wuhan Institute of Botany], Institute of Hydrobiology, Wuhan Branch of the National Science of Library and the joint Institute of hydroecology of MWR and CAS. In addition, Wuhan Branch is also the base of graduate education for CAS.
After the development of the past dozens of years, these institutes have formed their own predominance and characteristics, Their science directions and major research fields focus on the studies of atomic and molecular physics, radiophysics, applied mathematics, engineering mechanics, rock and soil engineering, botany, ecology, hydrobiology, genetics, environment sciences, virology, microbiology, molecular biology, Solid Geophysics, Geodesy, Physiography, etc. WHB also boasts 5 state key Laboratories, 7 CAS key laboratories, 3 Hubei provincial key laboratories, 2 national engineering and technology centers and 6 engineering centers supported by Hubei Province and Wuhan City.
During the past 50 years, the institutes have worked out a lot of scientific achievements of great impact to both at home and abroad. From 1956 to 2013, WHB has gained more than 2200 major S&T achievements, in which 801 achievements have been awarded by the authorities of or above the provincial level, including 23 National Awards [including one top-grade and seven first-grade awards] and 778 Provincial Awards [including five top-grade and one first-grade awards]. In addition, 405 books and 25 book translations from the WHB have been published during this period.
At present, the branch has had a staff of 3900, including 8 academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, an academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 26 winners of 'National Outstanding Youth Foundation”. In recent years, 76 young talented scientists have been supported by “Hundred Talents Program” of CAS. Among all the researchers, 1794 are professional and technical personnel. There are over 1700 mobile researchers, including the graduate students, post doctorate students, guest researchers and visiting scholars. In addition, 1400 postgraduate students are studying for their doctor’s or master’s degrees.
For a long time, the Branch attaches great importance to the cooperation between the CAS and the local authorities, and has established scientific and technological collaborations and exchanged programs with many local governments, industrial enterprises and universities. With the guidance of the new academy-running policy, catering to the national and local strategic demands, WHB will further strengthen the collaborations both domestically and internationally and make new contribution in basic research, strategic hi-tech development and the studies concerning sustainable socio-economic development.
