The 3rd National Symposium on Algal Taxonomy and Diversity was held in Dalian, Liaoning during Sept. 21 and 23. It was organized by the Chinese Society of Phycology of Chinese Society for Oceanology and Limnology and co-organized with Liaoning Normal University. Six researchers from Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB) attended the symposium.
The symposium centered on the latest progress and achievements made in the taxonomy and biodiversity of algae in China. In total, 45 abstracts were submitted, 5 keynote speeches and 23 oral presentations were made. Topics featured fields related to the major population of freshwater algae and marine algae, elucidation of the taxonomy, biodiversity and life history of algae by resorting to morphological, physical, biochemical and molecular systemic means. IHB Prof. Li Renhui gave a keynote speech entitled “New Information on Algal Systematics and Taxonomy--Focus on Cyanobacteria” at the symposium. He explained the recent new information on algal systematics and taxonomy as well as its worldwide nominating principles in his speech. He also introduced the new changes in algal systematics and taxonomy.
The first National Symposium on Algal Taxonomy and Diversity was held at IHB in 2008. The first symposium was launched by Prof. Li Renhui. Aimed at enhancing the research level of algal taxonomy and biodiversity in China and promoting the academic exchanges among researchers of algae, the symposium serves as a platform for the researchers in algal taxonomy to interact with each other.
