IHB Prof. WU Zhenbin received the Second Prize of 2009 National S&T Progress Award at the Great Hall of the People on Jan. 11, 2010. | The project “Ecological Rehabilitation Key Technology of Polluted Water Bodies and its Application”, mainly undertaken by Institute of Hydrobiology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IHB), was honored the second prize of 2009 National S&T Progress Award in Beijing, Jan. 11, 2010.
On behalf of the project team, IHB Prof. WU Zhenbin, principal investigator of the project, attended the award ceremony and received the prize. On the same day of the award ceremony, CAS president LU Yongxiang sent a congratulatory letter to IHB, extending his congratulations to IHB scientists.
The main approach to control water pollution is by ecological engineering. In the project, a new constructed wetland system for water treatment which based on the basic flowchart of integrated vertical-flow was invented through technological exploration, integration and demonstration. The new system will promote the large-scale application of constructed wetlands.
By combining landscape construction with water quality improvement and water ecosystem optimization, the restoration technology of water ecosystem which centers on aquatic macrophytes restoration and reconstruction was explored. By combining hydraulic transfer with ecological restoration, the ecological technology of water transfer which aims at improving water quality and optimizing water ecosystem was invented.

A feasible ecological restoration system of polluted water that is suitable for China’s current conditions was built up by the project team. This system will help to promote interdisciplinary developments. It sets an example for water pollution treatment throughout China and provides scientific and technological support for urban water ecosystem planning, water environment protection and regional social and economic development.
Collaborated with Beijing University and other institutions, the project team has planned, designed and set up more than 200 ecological engineering programs within 20 years. Great social and economic benefits have been achieved. The achievement has been popularized to over 20 cities, provinces and autonomous regions throughout China.
The award ceremony of the 2009 National S&T Awards was held at the Great Hall of the People on Jan. 11, 2010. Chinese state leaders including President HU Jintao, Premier WEN Jiabao attended the ceremony and presented awards to winners.
