1st Press Conference of the 3rd Global Botanic Gardens Congress |

On April 21, a Press Conference on the 3rd Global Botanic Gardens Congress (3GBGC) was held in Wuhan. BGCI China Programme Coordinator, Anle Tieu; BGCI Southeast Asia Programme Coordinator, Bian Tan; BGCI Consultant Martin Jenkins and representatives from Hubei Provincial Government and Wuhan Municipal Government presented the background to the Conference. All the local media, Newspapers, TV, and radio stations were invited.
The 3GBGC Secretary General, Ms. Junjie Gong hosted the press conference. Prof. Hongwen Huang, the chair of 3GBGC Executive Committee unveiled the 3GBGC logo. Anle Tieu and Bian Tan awarded the certificate to the winners of the logo competition. The logo designed by Mr. Wenshu Zhou, a maths teacher from Fujian province was selected as the 3GBGC logo from over 200 entries. Mr. Zhou explained the meaning of the logo at the press Conference.
Professor Hongwen Huang gave the media general information and described the progress in the preparation of the 3GBGC. The first announcement of the 3GBGC was posted to over 100 countries around the world in February 2006, and so far about 300 people from 72 countris have registered their interest. Professor Stephen Blackmore (Regius Keeper, Royal Botanic Garden Edinburgh, UK) was invited to be the chair of Scientific Programme Committee; 18 other world-renowned scientists were also invited to be members of the Committee such as Peter Crane (Director Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, UK) and Kathryn Kennedy (President Center Plant Conservation, USA).. Peter Raven (Director, Missouri Botanical Garden, USA). will be one of the Plenary Speakers. Over 350 volunteers have registered and are taking an active role in supporting the Congress. A trade exhibition will be held at the Congress; information will be available soon. There is only one year until the Congress, preparation work for the conference is intense.
Anle Tieu, BGCI representative, and representatives from the Hubei Provincial Government and Wuhan Municipal Government also gave their best wishes for the 3GBGC.
