Joint Lab of Invertebrate Virology
Wuhan Institute of Virology (WIV), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Wageningen University, the Netherlands (VIRO), and University of Montpellier, France (DRIM), all are leading institute or universities in researches of molecular virology of baculovirus, shrimp viruses and recombinant insecticide. The above three signed an agreement to establish the "Joint Lab of Invertebrate Virology" in Wuhan Institute of Virology, which was officially founded on October 16, 1998.
Eleven international famous scientists in the field were chosen as the first advisory board of the Joint Lab. The Joint Lab is running with moden scientific management as an open lab. Apart from the ordinary researches, it provides research grants for both Chinese and foreign applications. The Joint Lab has a set of advanced equipment for the research. The three partners promote training of scientists through exchanging visitors and co-supervising Ph.D students, intending to build the lab a collaborative, creative research group.
During the two years, the Joint Lab has published many scitific articles in Chinese and International journals. The laboratory has also carried out 15 projects including "One hundred Talent Projects" of CAS, and the National Excellent Youth Foundation. In 2001, the lab has published the complete sequence of HaSNPV, a very important baculovirus on cotton boll-warm control, and has developed a serial of recombinant HaSNPV with improved insecticidal properties. These will help to utilize the invertebrate virus resource for developing persistent agriculture.
