   The Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics (IRSM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, was founded in 1958. As a comprehensive scientific research institute strongly characterized by engineering application background, IRSM is a high-tech research institution base under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which is specially focusing on the study of the basis and application of rock and soil mechanics. The late Professor Tan Tjon-kie, the famous international specialist in rock and soil mechanics was the founder of this institute. In December 2001 the Laboratory of Rock and Soil Mechanics of IRSM was rated one of the Key Laboratories of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and the institute entered into the Knowledge Innovation Project of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in March 2002. In the same year, the Geo-environmental Engineering Key Laboratory was sponsored by Hubei Provincial Science and Technology Department.
   With full attention always focus on high and new technology and the key problems of rock and soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering in the construction of major basic establishments in China, the Institute has incessantly conducted basic strategic, and forward-looking research of scientific innovation in the field of large-scale underground spaces, high and steep slopes, and environmental rock and soil mechanics. Providing technical supports for construction of major basic establishments in China, and making great efforts for becoming a high-level research institution in the field of rock and soil mechanics and geotechnical engineering, generally acknowledged both in inland and oversea.  
    There are 209 staffs in the institute now, among them 149 are the research staffs. There is one fellow of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, 22 professors, 50 associate professors and senior engineers. The IRSM has doctoral and master's degree conferment centers in solid mechanics and geotechnical engineering, and a post-doctoral station of geotechnical engineering, with 107 graduate students study here. The Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics is a main unit of the Chinese Association of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, and IRSM also sponsors its subordinate committees: the Branch Committee of Underground Engineering and Underground Space, the Specialty Committee of Rock Dynamics, and the Specially Committee of Rock and Soil Mechanics under the Chinese Association of Mechanics.
    Chinese Journal of Rock Mechanics and Engineering, Rock and Soil Mechanics, and Chinese Journal of Geotechnical Engineering published in IRSM belong to the major national periodicals of natural sciences in China, papers from the former two having been indexed in EI compendex.
    In the past 45 years, over 300 major research projects have been completed which involves multiple fields of energy (hydroelectric power, nuclear electric power, thermal electric power, coal and petroleum), resources (marine exploitation and mining), traffic (railway and highway), urban construction, national defense, prevention and control of geological disasters, a large quantity of scientific fruits have been achieved, and great contributions have been made to the development of rock and soil mechanics and national economical construction. At present, a distinctive superiority has been formed in the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, CAS in the research fields, computational rock mechanics, intelligent rock mechanics, construction process mechanics, special soils mechanics, rock dynamics, 3D non-contact measurement for rock deformation, in-situ measurement technique, pile foundation testing technique, meso-macroscopic experiment technique, digital boring, stratigraphic information system, underground engineering and underground space, slope, and foundation projects. Taking the knowledge innovation as a turning point, under the guidance of the new academy-running policy, faced to the needs of the national strategy and the forward positions of the world sciences the Institute of Rock and Soil Mechanics, CAS is intensifying the primitive innovation and the high-tech integration innovation, and trying to realize its overleaping development.
