The Institute of Hydroecology, Ministry of Water Resources & Chinese Academy of Sciences(originally named the Institute of Reservoir Fisheries, Ministry of Water Resources & Chinese Academy of Sciences) was founded in 1987 and is located in Wuhan City, Hubei Province, China. At present, the Institute has a total of 97 staff membeers, nine of them are research professors, 31 associate research professors and 38 are assistant or junior scientists. The institute has four Departments, a central laboratory, an experimental basis, a company for supervision of resettlement, and a publishing office of the journal of Reservoir Fisheries (appearing bimonthly). The Expert Committee for Fisheries of the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society is affiliated with the Institute.
The Institute focuses on both basic and applied research related to ecological and environmental issues which result from water construction projects with the aim to support a sustainable development strategy in China. Since its foundation, the institute has succeeded to assess the environmental effects of great hydro-projects such as the Three Gorges Project and the South-to-North Water Diversion project, as well as studies on the fishery resource surveys in Chinese reservoirs, and on the restoration of the water environment in these reservoirs and lakes. In the past decades, there are more than 100 scientific projects achieved of which over 20 projects were rewarded by the Ministry of Science and Technology or the government of Hubei Province.
