Successful CAS Symposium on Ecological Security of Large-Scale Engineering Project

The CAS Large-Scale Symposium on Ecological Security of Engineering Project has been successfully convened during 17-21 July, 2009, in Wuhan. The symposium was sponsored by the Chinese Academy of Science, and was organized by the CAS Key Laboratory of Aquatic Botany and Watershed Ecology, Wuhan Botanical Garden of the CAS. Over one hundred of specialists and scholars from domestic and abroad attended the symposium. The commencement ceremony was held by Prof. Zhang Quanfa, deputy director of Wuhan Botanical Garden of the CAS. Prof. Li Shaohua, deputy executive director of Wuhan Botanical Garden of the CAS, kicked off the symposium by delivering a welcome speech. Several high-level delegates, including Mr. Tang Yuhua, director of Bureau of Personnel and Education of the CAS, Mr. Liu Guohua, deputy director of the Migration and Environment Department of the Office of South-to-North Water Diversion Project Construction Commission of the State Council, Mrs. Huang Zhenli, deputy director of the Reservoir Administration Department of the Office of Three Gorges Project Construction Commission of the State Council, and Mr. Su Ronghui, deputy director general of Bureau of Life Science and Biotechnology of the CAS, were invited and made speeches at the opening ceremony.

Special seminars on different topics such as the impact of large scale engineering project on ecology, remote sensing and modeling techniques, and biodiversity were held after the keynote presentation on July 18, 2009. During the symposium, experts presented the latest progress in scientific research of the ecological security of large scale project construction in the world, and put emphasis on discussions of the impact of the Three Gorges Project and South to North Water Diversion Project on ecological security. Moreover, experts also discussed and exchanged their ideas on other common interest projects.

The purpose of the symposium is summarized as follows: (1) discussing of the impact of the construction and operation of large-scale engineering projects on ecology and environment, (2) discovering ecological theories and measures to stop or reduce the negative effects of large-scale engineering project on ecology and environment, and thus ensuring the ecological security and sustainable development of large-scale projects, (3) facilitating the scientific exchanges and cooperation among ecological scientists from domestic and abroad, (4) providing a chance for Chinese ecological scientists to discover the latest progress in ecological engineering research, and thus leading to faster and better development of large-scale engineering projects in China.

After the closing ceremony, some experts jointed a two-day field trip to explore the Three Gorges reservoir area.
